Dental Inlays and Onlays
In teeth where mild or moderate damage from decay has occurred, or the teeth have cracked and the damage does not warrant a full crown- dental inlays and onlays are utilized. Porcelain, composite resin and sometimes gold are used to create inlays and onlays.Inlays are used when bonded material only covers the center of the tooth and not the top of any tooth cusps. Onlays are used when the bonded material extends further, covering the cusps of the tooth.
What are the benefits of inlays and onlays?
Natural look and fit: Porcelain and resin Inlays and onlays have a natural tooth color that makes them virtually invisible compared to metal fillings. They will also not see any expansion or contracting effects due to temperature, which can be an issue with metal fillings as well.
Minimal tooth structure removed: Inlays and onlays require the minimal removal of a tooth’s surface, helping to preserve the maximum amount of healthy tooth structure while restoring decayed or damaged areas.
